On April 10, 2012, the FDA announced that all DROSPIRENONE (DRSP) containing birth control pills would carry a revised warning label informing users and prescribers of the increased risk of blood clots associated with the pills. Specifically, an FDA funded study, and other independent studies have found, since 2009, that there is a higher risk of blood clots that accompanies the use of a DROSPIRENONE (DRSP) containing birth control pill. This risk has been estimated as 74% higher, or 3x more likely to cause a clot.

On April 13, 2012, reports emerged in the U.S. and abroad that a certain number of DRSP LAWSUITS had been settled out of court. Both REUTERS and BLOOMBERG reported settlements estimated at $110 Millions Dollars. In "BAYER SAID TO PAY $110 MILLION IN YAZ BIRTH CONTROL CASES", Jef Feeley and Margaret Cronin Fisk explore reports of blood clot settlements having been reached out of court. Similarly, in "BAYER TO PAY AT LEAST $110 MILLION IN SETTLEMENT: REPORT" by Ludwig Burger, noted that the manufacturer declined to comment, but reported that resolutions may have been reached of a select minority of the cases.

The FDA, in September 2011, publicly recognized a growing 'concern' over the risks posed by these drugs. Subsequently, FDA released findings from an FDA funded study confirming an elevated risk of blood clots from DRSP (DROSPIRENONE) containing birth control pills. Public hearings were held of a joint panel of FDA 'experts' to discuss multiple studies finding these pills presented an elevated risk to users and the manufacturers claims to the contrary. In a 21-5 vote, the experts concluded that the pills and multiple studies warranted a new warning of increased risks of blood clots in comparison to other spills. In a 15-11 vote, the pills narrowly survived a vote to determine their remaining on the market because they were effective in preventing pregnancy and outweighed the potential risks of pregnancy to users.
