The FDA, in September 2011, publicly recognized a growing 'concern' over the risks posed by these drugs. Subsequently, FDA released findings from an FDA funded study confirming an elevated risk of blood clots from DRSP (DROSPIRENONE) containing birth control pills. Public hearings were held of a joint panel of FDA 'experts' to discuss multiple studies finding these pills presented an elevated risk to users and the manufacturers claims to the contrary. In a 21-5 vote, the experts concluded that the pills and multiple studies warranted a new warning of increased risks of blood clots in comparison to other spills. In a 15-11 vote, the pills narrowly survived a vote to determine their remaining on the market because they were effective in preventing pregnancy and outweighed the potential risks of pregnancy to users.
