DRSP UPDATE FROM FDA

On October 27, 2011, FDA released the final report of a FDA funded study that evaluates the risk of blood clots in users of several birth control pills including DRSP (DROSPIRENONE). This "Safety Announcement", followed the most recent release of a BMJ study, on October 25, 2011, that adds to the growing body of scientific literature on the increased risks of blood clots posed by DRSP (DROSPIRENONE) containing birth control pills.

FDA has scheduled joint meetings, and public hearings, on December 8, 2011, betwen the Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee and the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee to discuss conflicting evidence on DRSP (DROSPIRENONE) pills and the increased risk of blood clots they pose to users in comparison to older forms of birth control pills.
